I enjoy conducting scientific work, visiting mountains, cooking, landscape photography, and solving problems. I am currently doing statistics/machine learning in the field of medical science and biology for a living.

France (2018, 2019)

I visited France multiple times with my wife to visit our close friend Karin in her village. My wife and I also visited Chamonix to see Mont Blanc and hike in nearby areas.

Trails

Multiple trails in Chamonix and in and around the village of our friend called Colombey les Choiseul.

Food

French food is quite famous, and I have tried various French dishes. However, often I am more impressed by French desserts and bakery products than the main courses. Flan is my favorite French dessert. I found that most French cheeses are quite different from the Dutch ones I am used to. However, when they are served with a good Baguette and wine, I enjoy them as well.

Transportation

I never tried hitchhiking in France. Public transport is expensive and also prone to strikes. It is reliable when there are no strikes.

People

In terms of friendliness, French are somewhere between Italians and Germans. Not overly friendly, but with me many a time, they did go an extra mile to make me comfortable and welcome. Besides, I enjoy listening to French conversations because it is almost music even when they curse.

Special Experiences

Viewing Mont Blanc in Chamonix and celebrating with locals while sharing supper in the small French village where Karin lives. Oh! and realizing how dirty and overrated Paris is compared to the lesser-known but stunning towns and villages across the countryside.
