Luxembourg (2015 – 2017)

I would never have thought in my life that I will visit Luxembourg every six months for three straight years. I have hiked extensively in Luxembourg in the summer and winter months and found it incredibly pretty. It was all possible due to a very close friend of mine called Karin, whom I met over Couchsurfing. Karin is about to retire soon, but her spirit and enthusiasm are infectious. I am thankful to her for hosting me and sponsoring food and tickets for an opera when I was a somewhat financially broke student in Belgium.

Trails

Multiple long and short walks near Larochette and much of the Northern half of Luxembourg.

Food

I never tried food in Luxembourg because my host made an amazing variety of dishes and packed me lunches for my hiking trips.

Transportation

Public transportation is the cheapest among all western countries, and I, for one, have been able to cross the entire country for 2 euros. Hitchhiking was neither difficult nor easy and required a bit of luck.

People

Despite my multiple visits to the country, I could hardly get any chance to meet locals except my host Karin. There is almost nothing I know about Luxembourgish people.

Special Experiences

Hitchhike ride with an ex-race car driver, view of Larochette from a hilltop, cooking with and for Karin, learning from her experiences and her stories of her world travel, arriving at Karin's place after surviving a snow blizzard. On my third visit, I got invited by a black belt Taekwondo expat from Cape Verde to his birthday party barely five minutes after we met at a bus stop. To my surprise, the next time I visited Larochette and went to his house, it was his son's birthday. He was super friendly and even offered his car for me to travel within Luxembourg. I am grateful to him for his hospitality and hope to see him again when I visit Luxembourg.
